Mortuary, Sligo University Hospital
This award-winning design for a new mortuary was commissioned by Sligo University Hospital.
Our brief was to create new family and viewing facilities to the highest standard but within a limited budget. Our concept was centred around the traditional Irish wake which is held at home and where visitors come and go to pay their respects to the deceased and spend time with family and friends. Visitors to the facility enter into an open-plan space with a dining table and seating which is connected to the viewing room and a small private garden. The front entrance is designed to be welcoming, familiar and inviting. The building is also used for practice and recitals by the hospital’s choir.
